Preschool Activity with Richard Scarry’s Busytown
A fun preschool activity using Richard Scarry’s Busytown books is easy to create. The characters in the book are all animals that portray all the different facets of life. There are firefighters, bakers, policemen, moms, dads, children doctors, teachers, florists, and many many more. All of his characters are loveable animals such as racoons, rabbits, owls, bears, pigs, cats and dogs.
The illustrations in Busytown of mechanical devices and structures are drawn with simple detailed accuracy, which helps preschoolers learn about the world around them.
Richard Scarry and his wife Patricia created manyLittle Golden Books. Some of those titles include favorites like, The Fox and the Crow The Dog and His Bone, The Country Mouse and the City Mouse, Three Aesop Fables.
Scarry also wrote and illustrated a number of other books such as Richard Scarry’s Animal Nursery Tales, Richard Scarry’s Peasant Pig and the Terrible Dragon: with Lowly Worm and the Jolly Jester as well as a a series called Tinker and Tanker and the Pirates
The Busytown books are written with words that are very simple. That makes it easier for the preschoolers to study, more closely, the very BUSY pictures and figure out all the action.
For this preschool activity I made a sort of cross section of a house. I left the rooms and outside of the house empty so the preschoolers can decorate any which way they wan to.
I also made some simple animal characters that can be colored and pasted in the house, or they can be made into stick puppets, by taping them onto popsicle sticks. My kids had fun putting on a little puppet show with their busy house as their puppet theater backdrop.
